Patrick ‘Salvado’ Idringi’s “Man from Ombokolo” show is back, and it is promising even more rib cracking jokes than the last time. And to rev things up, The Singleton is joining in on the party.

Regarded the world’s best tasting and fastest growing single malt whisky, The Singleton has announced sponsorship of the second edition of Salvado’s one-man performance, which is slated to take place on Friday October 27, 2017 at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

“The Singleton experience is one of crafting immediately pleasurable whisky experiences and an evening with the country’s leading comedian, Salvado is a guarantee of laughter and pleasure. On behalf of UBL, I am pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring this year’s edition of Man from Ombokolo. We are looking forward to a Friday night of laughter while sipping on the smooth, fruity Speyside richness of The Singleton,” said Annette Nakiyaga, Head of Whisky Portfolio at Uganda Breweries.

Patrick Idringi Salvado

“The most pleasurable whisky moments go beyond the liquid. The Singleton forms creative collectives with the most talented crafts people to forge unforgettable experiences and Salvado is one of the most talented people of our time,” Nakiyaga added.

Singleton Whiskey

Salvado, one of the continent’s top comedians, blazed a trail in June 2015 when he staged the first-ever one-man comedy show in Uganda, earning rave reviews after a stellar performance at a sold-out venue. Since then Salvado has gone on to scale even bigger heights, and is currently part of Glo Laffta Fest, a comedy tour in Nigeria. Salvado is the only comedian from outside the West African state participating in the tour.

He has also received numerous award nominations this year from Uganda and abroad, with the most notable being a nomination in the Savannah Comics Choice Awards in South Africa, where he made it to the top five.

“Fans coming to Man from Ombokolo should expect a show filled with discussions on topical issues, but with a comical element to them. Since it is going to be a VIP show, we only have one standard fee, which is Shs100,000 and Shs3m for VVIP seating,” Salvado explained.

Nakiyaga added that the VVIP seating comes with a bottle of The Singleton of Dufftown and she is eager to convert first time drinkers.

“The Singleton simplifies the language of Single Malts to open doors for new drinkers. It is made of taste, so expect pleasure from the first sip,” she says.

Tickets to the show are available at Easy Ticket points, and major Shell stations at locations around Kampala.

The theme for this year’s Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards; ‘Fashion Take Over’ was launched yesterday at the ENS Auditorium at Rwenzori Towers. The Fashion Takeover, whose focal point is celebrating the business and entrepreneurial potential in Uganda and the rest of Africa, was flagged off with a seminar and cocktail shindig last evening.

Brian Ahumuza poses with the SEED show designers after the seminar

The seminar had the ASFA’s team, led by proprietor; Brian Ahumuza and General adviser Olivia Nakitto Tibayeita equip the Skilled Expressive Entrepreneurial Design (SEED) Show (mentored by Ras Kasozi) fashion designers, with entrepreneurial skills to situate them to break into the market and earn a living off their creations.

Brian Ahumuza talking to the SEED show

Proprietor of the SEED show and renowned fashion designer, Ras Kasozi (of the Kas Wear fashion line) relayed his excitement at Brian Ahumuza’s devoting time to talk to the budding designers under his mentorship.

The designers share a light moment with Ras Kasozi and Brian Ahumuza after the seminar f5

“In Uganda, whenever you introduce yourself as one who earns off fashion, people are quick to ask if you have another stream of income other than that. But in actual sense, fashion leads many aspects of life. People are judged according to the way they dress. If anything, the way you dress defines you. It determines the way people perceive you and your employment.

It is an essential. Why then can’t we make prosperous businesses out of it?

The time is now for ‘Fashion to take over’. That said, I am very excited that the ASFA’s are giving young designers a platform to showcase the work of their hands. Also, I commend Brian Ahumuza for devoting time to this cause,” relayed an ecstatic Kasozi after the seminar.

Proprietor of the ASFA’s Brian Ahumuza, flanked by his General Adviser Olivia Nakitto Tibayeita took the designers through an hour long lecture on branding, marketing and other business elements necessary for budding designers to build successful fashion businesses.

Olivia Tibayeita speaking to the designers f1

“Every suburb in the country right now is littered with boutiques and fashion collectors. And the fact that they are thriving is testimony that

Fashion has actually taken over. What makes you outstanding however is how you handle your business. The way you brand, market, communicate, treat your customers, and many other business aspects that are usually ignored determine whether or not your business will thrive,” said Brian in one of the sections of the seminar.

The SEED show designers (10) left the seminar excited. Many thanked Brian for the opportunity he had given them.

“This is a life changing seminar. It is like he was speaking to me. Every business mistake he cited was something I’d done before. The consequences he talked about are also some that I have suffered. I am truly grateful for this opportunity,” opined one of the designers.

Members of Parliament hailing from Eastern Uganda have lauded Hima Cement for choosing their region as the new location for its new grinding station.

While on a site visit to the new plant in Tororo, the MPs led by Hon. Anita Among, the Bukedea District Woman Representative were pleased with the progress of the works at the 1million metric tonne capacity grinding station.

Hon. Anita Among, the Woman MP for Bukedea district leads a team of legislators and Hima Cement staff during a guided tour of the new Hima plant in Tororo

“As members of parliament representing people from Eastern Uganda, we shall do everything within our means to ensure that our investors are protected. Our people have been given a rare opportunity to uplift themselves and it is for this reason we shall ensure that investors such as Hima Cement are given the adequate support,” said Among.

The $40m plant is expected to be completed by June 2018 and will more than double Hima Cement’s capacity from the current 800,000 metric tonnes to about 1.8m tonnes.

Sheila Byenkya (L), the Project Manager of the Tororo Hima Plant takes MPs on a guided tour of the new Hima Cement grinding station in Tororo

Fredrick Angura, the MP for Tororo County North on his part asked the locals to remain patient as Hima Cement works on the final touches. He said those who are not yet employed by the cement maker will find better opportunities as the plant comes online.

“This is a long term investment. One that will lead to the development of not only our infrastructure but also bring about socio-economic benefits. I know there is a huge amount of expectation from our people but let’s give the investor the appropriate support because the benefits will be long term. We have already seen the population around the cement plant growing. That opens up new business opportunities,” he stated.

Sheila Byenkya, the Project Head of Hima’s Expansion Project in Tororo explained that the plant is currently employing between 150 – 200 local persons and that the number expected to rise to between 400 – 500 on completion.

“While sourcing for labour, the locals are given first priority. Currently, we have a few Chinese engineers working on the site temporarily. When completed, the locals will be the majority of the people employed at the plant,” she divulged.
