In curating and creating the very best content and channels for DStv customers, M-Net also boasts an impressive and long list of revolutionary moves and “firsts”– from being the first to screen movies without ad breaks to bringing local versions of blockbuster reality shows like Big Brother Africa, The Voice and Idols to our shores, producing multiple language-specific TV channels, going HD and adding events-driven pop-up channels as well as services like “Express from the US” giving DStv customers the best content from around the world first.

M-Net Movies BlockParty will be screened around the clock for 30 days. Each night there will be seriously funny classic series, side-splitting and raucous stand-up comedy shows.

Production

In 2012, Tim Crothers published a book for ESPN titled, The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl’s Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster, which chronicled Phiona Mutesi’s life. Walt Disney Pictures optioned the rights to the book that same year.[11] Tendo Nagenda, Disney’s senior creative executive, developed the project into production.[12] Nagenda went to visit Mira Nair at her Ugandan home to tell the story of Mutesi. Nair was captivated by the story. After meeting with Mutesi, her mother Harriet, and the chess group run by Mutesi’s coach Robert Katende; Nair invited screenwriter William Wheeler to come to Kampala to conduct substantial interviews with the principal figures as a foundation for a script.

A scene from Queen of Katwe

The cast was announced in January 2015, where David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o were in negotiations to star in the film as Robert Katende and Harriet Mutesi. Nyong’o was Nair’s first choice for the role of Harriet. Nyong’o said her decision to play Harriet took “several seconds”. Oyelowo was also Nair’s first choice for the role of Robert and he quickly accepted the role for the film. However, Nair claimed that finding an actress to play the role of Phiona Mutesi was the most difficult part of making the film. The search for casting Phiona began in July 2014 and the production team have auditioned seven hundred girls by the end of the year. Queen of Katwe’s casting director found Ugandan dancer Madina Nalwanga in a community dance class and the newcomer was cast as Phiona.

Principal photography began in April 2015 and wrapped in June of that year after fifty-four days of shooting. The film was shot entirely in Katwe in Kampala, Uganda and Johannesburg, South Africa.

Release

Queen of Katwe premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2016. The film is also scheduled to be screened at the Urban World Festival on September 22. Later, the film will make its European debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 9.

The borrowed airtime may be used to make calls, send SMS or buy data

For the first time in the Ugandan telecommunications industry, subscribers will be able to borrow airtime more than once, thanks to Airtel Uganda’s newly revamped ‘Beerako’ service.

‘Beerako’ is a service that allows customers to borrow airtime to call, text and even buy data for their personal use and pay back whenever they recharge their accounts. With the recent improvement of the service, subscribers can now borrow a maximum of two loans within their qualified limit, with each loan having its own grace period.

14368926_1084233308335043_316540474514270509_n

“By simply dialing *155#, our subscribers will always be able to stay in touch by calling, messaging or buying data to access social media,” commented Remy Tugume, Airtel Uganda’s New Product Development Manager.

“One of the unique features offered by the new ‘Beerako’ is the fact that only one loan can be recovered at a time – the oldest one first – when an account is recharged and as soon as the first loan has been repaid, you are free to get a second loan within your loanable limit,” Tugume added, revealing that in the event that a SIM card has been replaced, the advance is readily available the moment the number is back in use as long as the grace period has not expired.

‘Beerako’ attracts a service fee of only 11% per loan and subscribers can access it by simply dialing *155# to borrow and *170# to check the available balance. In the case that a subscriber has recharged their account and wants to settle their loans, they are able to trigger recovery through the pay back option on the Menu.

The man from Ombokolo has already jumped into the top 10 and he announced it by saying, we are now number 8, the love has been overwhelming, all I need is to step on that stage and the rest will be mine. I appreciate the love thus far…. Let’s keep Liking and sharing this video.

Salvado will further need the backing of his fans for him to stand a chance to win the $100,000 prize and also become the comedy peace ambassador. With voting ending next month, October 2nd, the fan support has been impressive and it would be great news for the Ugandan comedy industry if the proud father of two can pull this off.

This comes after two successful shows at Kampala Serena Hotel ‘Africa Laughs’ and another in Gaborone, Botswana.

It has been a successful comedy career for the former telecom engineer who plied his trade at MTN Uganda before joining comedy.

For Salvado, this is more than mileage and we pray her wins the competition.

“The more you watch, Like and share the video, the more votes I accumulate, round 2 will only see 20 comedians qualify of the 89 from 56 countries. So let’s watch, share and like the video as many times as possible. We need this,” Salvado said. Click here to watch: http://indi.com/7fz65

This is a lady who has been HIV positive for over 20 years. The good news is she has never been admitted or even bedridden. Because of her testimony she decided to give back to God by taking care of children who society has neglected. She has given them a reason to smile, love again and look towards a great future by providing shelter, food and above all, love for them. Lets us come together and join Jajja Esseza on 30th September 2016 at her home in Gayaza for this good cause,” Carol said.
